The new study followed participants for three years. “Most prior studies of weight loss only followed patients for a year, and a few out to two years,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Erin Bohula, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a cardiologist and investigator with the TIMI Study Group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “The challenge with lifestyle interventions is that patients tend to lose weight up front, and then the weight is regained, sometimes beyond the original weight. So the challenge is to keep it off long term.”
VLCDs are doctor-supervised diets lasting several weeks. The meals are nutritionally balanced, but expensive -- people can end up spending thousands of dollars over time. VLCDs safely produce a loss of 15% to 25% of body weight in 12 weeks. That's for those who finish the program: 25% to half of people don't complete the program. Weight returns when the diet is stopped and happens rapidly; some experts say its best to take a more sustainable approach to weight loss comparable to that of regular diets.
“Inadequate sleep is not only associated with a higher intake of calories, but is also correlated with a host of other behaviors that contribute to weight gain. For example, we’re less likely to exercise when we're tired, we have lower impulse control — which can cause us to stray from standard healthy routines — and finally, being tired means we’re more likely to both select foods high in calories and low in nutrients and overestimate portion sizes. In short, adequate sleep keeps us sharp. When we’re well rested we're less likely to seek an energy boost from high-calorie foods or caffeine!” — Jennifer Markowitz, RD, clinical dietitian at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia
These low-calorie, water-rich, bite-sized tomatoes are great in salads, recipes or anytime you need a snack. Or, cut these candy-like veggies in half and add them to your next pasta dish, Cooper recommends. Adding ‘high volume', lower-calorie and nutrient-rich foods like cherry tomatoes means you can still enjoy foods like pasta without sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
In season late spring, cucumbers are the perfect diet food. Low in calorie and full of water, they contain sulfur and silicon, which can act as natural diuretics. They are also extremely versatile, Cooper says. Try them in sandwiches, in salads or filled with light tuna salad. "Cucumbers are good for making into homemade pickles, which are also healthy, low cal and add zing to meals," Cooper says.
There are four different Optislim diet shake ranges to choose from, depending on your goals. The Optislim VLCD Classic range comes in chocolate, strawberry, espresso, vanilla, and banana flavours, sold in boxes of 21 individual sachets. The advanced VLCD Platinum shake (coming in the same flavours as the Classic range) kicks it up a notch with increased fat burning, reduced hunger, and higher energy levels for faster results, according to Optislim. For a less intense weight management program, the Optislim LCD Life range comes in the widest range of flavours, some of which you’d be hard pressed to find from other brands – such as honeycomb, lemon cheesecake, choc mint, and French vanilla. These can be purchased as boxes of seven sachets of the same flavour, or as a variety pack containing the first five flavours.
Otherwise, in terms of “diet”, it’s just overwhelming out there for people searching for the “right one”. An excellent review article this year does detail quite convincing evidence that a low-carb high-fat Atkins-style diet not only reduces the hunger urge, but also has clear benefits in insulin resistance, cardiac markers, and weight loss. The DASH diet really does help to lower blood pressure and weight, and the Mediterranean diet also seems to help with heart disease and some weight loss.
