A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association pinned five FDA-blessed medications against one another to test for their legitimacy. Researchers looked at 28 randomized clinical trials of nearly 30,000 overweight adults (yep, that's pretty solid). They found that, on average, each drug helped people lose 5 percent of their body weight after one year (about 10 pounds for a 200-pound person). All of the meds were equally effective.
This dark, leafy green has a long list of benefits: it's a rich source of iron, folic acid, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, and powerful antioxidants that can help fight diseases like ovarian and breast cancer. Spinach is also loaded with magnesium, which can lower blood sugar and insulin levels (aiding your body in weight loss as a result), according to a 2013 study.

Of course, diet shakes of any type won't work toward weight loss unless you eat fewer calories than you burn every day. To use diet shakes and meal replacement beverages most effectively, determine a calorie allowance for weight loss. You may be tempted to slash daily intake to 1,200 calories for fast results, but 1,500 calories may help you stick with your eating changes longer. Include exercise, which aids weight control and promotes good health.

While we’re on the subject of water, why not throw a few lemon slices into the hydrating and satiating beverage? In addition to adding a pop of color and flavor to a tall glass of H2O, lemon can also help encourage weight loss. Just one of the bright citrus fruits contains an entire day’s worth of vitamin C, a nutrient that has the power to reduce levels of a stress hormone called cortisol that triggers hunger and fat storage. Additionally, lemons also contain polyphenols, which researchers say may ward off fat accumulation and weight gain. 

A top belly-flattening favorite, yogurt is stacked with probiotics, bacteria that may help reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs. Pick a Greek yogurt over the regular kind, says Kara Lydon, a registered dietitian at Chobani. Greek nonfat or low-fat versions contain only half as much sodium as regular yogurt — and no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

"Artichokes are another spring vegetable that can really help you trim down," Keller says. "Served either hot or cold, artichokes are very low in calories.  A large artichoke provides 15 percent of the daily requirements of folate and vitamin C, 300mg of potassium and about 2g of fiber. Bupropion-naltrexone is a combination drug. Naltrexone is used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence. Bupropion is an antidepressant and quit-smoking aid. Like all antidepressants, bupropion carries a warning about suicide risk. Bupropion-naltrexone can raise blood pressure, and monitoring is necessary at the start of treatment. Common side effects include nausea, headache and constipation.

Eggs are rich in high-quality protein, fats and essential nutrients, like vitamin D and choline. It's the protein, and the time of day we tend to eat them, that especially makes them a powerhouse for weight loss. Eating a high-protein breakfast promotes weight loss, because protein increases satiety while regulating hunger and appetite hormones, helping fend off your hunger until lunchtime. One study found that eating eggs for breakfast left people feeling more satisfied than those who had bagels—which helped them eat less throughout the day.
Replacing meals with protein shakes may help you reduce your daily calories, which can help you lose weight. But eventually you will need to start eating solid food again, which may cause excess weight to return if you don't choose wisely. And if you rely too heavily on protein shakes to replace regular meals, you'll miss out on the nutritional benefits of whole foods.
When it comes to choosing a weight loss shake, there is no one right answer. There are many commercial weight loss shakes that taste great and contain a healthy balance of ingredients. Plus, it is tough to beat the convenience of grabbing a pre-packaged weight loss shake. The downside is that some commercial brands contain a lot of added sugar, chemical additives or preservatives, or other ingredients that are generally unhealthy.
Yogurt is protein-packed and full of probiotics, which are good for gut health and may help your weight-loss efforts. Your gut health can impact your weight, and eating more fiber and probiotics helps keep your gut bacteria happy, which can be good for your metabolism (read more about your gut-weight connection). Go Greek for more protein; plus, research from Appetite found that consumption of Greek yogurt was associated with reduced appetite and increased satiety. Just keep an eye on added sugars in flavored yogurts, which only add calories. Instead, use fresh fruit to sweeten plain yogurt.
Yogurt is also one of my favorite recommendations, not just for the way the probiotics help our microbiome and immune system, but also because the literature shows that yogurt helps to manage weight loss and waist circumference. I actually prefer higher fat than the low fat versions, and adding fresh fruit to non-sweetened yogurt is a great way to start your day. Add a pack of instant oatmeal, microwaved with soy milk, and you’ve got a healthy and filling breakfast.
That doesn’t mean people who use products like Shake It Baby won’t lose weight, but if they do, Gans says this can likely be chalked up to other factors — like consuming less and exercising more. While Shake It Baby's ingredients don't appear to be harmful, per se, Gans points out, “It’s not like somebody can continue eating a cheeseburger, and fries, and pizza…[then] pop this Super CitriMax and expect to lose weight. [For] people who use shakes, usually, the calories are a lot less than they’ve been eating. That Flat Tummy company’s website...even say[s] [people should] eat less.” According to MyFitnessPal's calorie content database, one Shake It Baby shake contains just 130 calories — a lot fewer than in a typical meal.
