Also known as yam or yambean, this Mexican turnip is a great source of fiber, says Dr. Jaime Schehr, a registered dietitian in New York City. “This plant is great for weight loss due to its high fiber to sugar ratio (a whopping 32g of fiber per medium jimaca—that’s almost an entire day’s worth). They are also a good source of potassium, an essential mineral in maintaining water balance in our body.”
Rich in vitamin C and phytochemicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, grapes may also protect against Type 2 diabetes, says Kara Ellis, a registered dietitian in New York City. “Grapes also have a high water content, making them a refreshing summer snack that helps you feel full and satisfied (1 cup of fresh grapes contain only 100 calories).”

Hi Adrian, thank you for this amazing site and helpful information. I am 5'4 and started my weight loss journey when I was 187 pounds. Thanks to your videos am now down to 150 pounds. According to BMI am now in my normal range, but still i feel that i could loose upto 15 more pounds. I have tried the workout plan here but its still very hard to loose the last 10-15 pounds. Do you think Yohimbine HCL will be helpful for me? I have the typical hour-glas body shape, so it would be great to lose some of the stubborn thigh fat. I dont do any weight liftning, i just stick to the HIIT jumping jacks and ski steps workouts and eat upto 100 g protein daily. What do you recommend to lose the remaining 10-15 pounds?
Nettles offer a lot of nutrition for very little calories, says Los Angeles based Registered Dietitian Lauren O'Connor. "Rich in potassium, calcium, vitamins A, B, C and iron, nettles offer appetite-suppressing qualities as they release neurotransmitters serotonin and acetylcholine. They also possess diuretic properties alleviating water weight, releasing toxins and purifying the blood," says O'Connor. Not sure how to eat them? Substitute nettles in recipes that call for spinach (in dips, soups or spinach pie).
Research bears that out. In a Journal of the American Dietetic Association study published in 2001, women who lost weight on a reduced-calorie plan that included meal replacement beverages maintained their losses after a year by drinking at least one diet shake a day in place of a regular meal. Their counterparts in the study, who lost weight on a conventional low-fat diet that did not use meal replacement beverages, regained most of their initial weight.

When it comes to choosing a weight loss shake, there is no one right answer. There are many commercial weight loss shakes that taste great and contain a healthy balance of ingredients. Plus, it is tough to beat the convenience of grabbing a pre-packaged weight loss shake. The downside is that some commercial brands contain a lot of added sugar, chemical additives or preservatives, or other ingredients that are generally unhealthy.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: fat is your friend! To be more specific, healthy fats will be your weight loss friends. Consider adding extra virgin olive oil to your diet and you might see the scale start to tip in your favor. One Journal of Women’s Health study discovered that an EVOO-enriched diet helped participants lose more weight than those on a low-fat diet. Like peanuts and avocados, extra virgin olive oil’s belly-blasting abilities are thought to be a result of the monounsaturated fats it contains.

I'm 18 and I suffer from severe depression and bipolar disorder. All my life i have been given mental health medication that causes weight gain! I am now currently on medication that still causes me to gain weight. I have been on it for 2 years and in 2 years i have gone from 127 lbs to 265! Im only 4 11 and I am totally miserable! I dont have much time for exercise because i am a student and even when i get the chance i am lost as to what exercises to do. I dont want to be small. I like being bigger and i think it fits me but i want a smaller stomach and smaller thighs! I used a green tea supplement years ago and lost 30 lbs in 2 months but im not sure what to do anymore!
Long term weight loss requires a change in your eating and exercise habits to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Taking a pill as a quick-fix method does not encourage you to gain a better understanding of how foods and exercise affect your weight. You are less likely to check food labels, record your food intake, and fit in your exercise if you think a pill is going to do the work for you. Taking pills forever is not sustainable and once you stop, you’ll be back to your poor habits and initial weight.
Think of each almond as a natural weight-loss pill. A study of overweight and obese adults found that, combined with a calorie-restricted diet, consuming a little more than a quarter cup of the nuts can decrease weight more effectively than a snack comprised of complex carbohydrates and safflower oil—after just two weeks! (And after 24 weeks, those who ate the nuts experienced a 62% greater reduction in weight and BMI!) For optimal results, eat your daily serving before you hit the gym. A study printed in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that almonds, rich in the amino acid L-arginine, can actually help you burn more fat and carbs during workouts. If you need a pick-me-up, brew some green tea. The low-calorie drink is packed with antioxidants called catechins, which may help you burn more calories and fat. One study suggested that drinking 4 cups of green tea every day  may lead to decreases in weight and blood pressure. To make it even healthier, add a squeeze of lemon -- it helps your body absorb them.

Recent studies have also shown that garlic supports blood-sugar metabolism, and helps control lipid levels in the blood. What’s more? Eating garlic can help boost your immune system, help ward off heart disease, fight inflammation, increase memory retention, and lower blood pressure, so consider adding some to your next meal. At the very least, it is preferable over salt, which can lead to water weight gain and bloating.
The med works to control your blood sugar by increasing insulin release and suppressing glucagon, which leads to decreased sugar released by the liver, says Rader. It also slows the stomach-emptying process to help control hunger. A Journal of the American Medical Association study noted that it helps people achieve weight loss “by reducing appetite and caloric intake, rather than increasing energy expenditure.”

What makes some grub extra satisfying? "Fiber and protein can help," says Barbara Rolls, author of "The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet." Getting more bang for your bite matters, too: Low-energy-density foods, which yield big portions for few calories, "allow you to eat more without gaining weight," Rolls says. Want some of that? Make room for these secret-weapon picks.
2. Get 10,000 steps a day. Physical activity is key to maintaining weight loss. Can’t take five steps without pain? Take two steps 5,000 times. That’s how important this is for you. We think it reduces type 2 diabetes (and it’s 10,000 steps – not 9,000 steps – that does it) and increases glucose or sugar uptake from your blood into your cells, helping keep your waist thin and your weight loss progressing. Buy two excellent pedometers – one to use and one so that if you lose the first, you won’t have an excuse to stop short of your goal. Set your pedometer when you wake up and do not stop walking or stepping until it hits 10,000. You must accomplish 10,000 steps a day, every day, no ifs, ands or buts.
What's more trustworthy than a diet built by experts from the Mayo Clinic? Created by doctors, nutritionists, and all-star chefs, the plan has a few phases: In the first, you should lose 6 to 10 pounds in two weeks. Yogurt is protein-packed and full of probiotics, which are good for gut health and may help your weight-loss efforts. Your gut health can impact your weight, and eating more fiber and probiotics helps keep your gut bacteria happy, which can be good for your metabolism (read more about your gut-weight connection). Go Greek for more protein; plus, research from Appetite found that consumption of Greek yogurt was associated with reduced appetite and increased satiety. Just keep an eye on added sugars in flavored yogurts, which only add calories. Instead, use fresh fruit to sweeten plain yogurt.

Kimchi is a spicy Korean condiment that's made with fermented cabbage and is a great source of vitamins A, B, and C. Because it's fermented (like sauerkraut), kimchi contains tons of those good probiotics that aid the body in digestion. A recent study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science found that maintaining healthy bacteria in your gut can improve gut lining, which in turn could help reduce fat mass and inflammation.
